RP's 45 Grip review

This review is for the 45 grip frame upgrade that Allan Carpenter does for the PPS Typhoon.  Allan is a Palmer Pursuit Shop Employee.  This is a modification that does break the PPS warrantee (kind of).  With that caveat, I recommend this upgrade to your Palmer Typhoon.  With this upgrade and with the new QEV upgrades (not reviewed here), the comfort and speed of you trusty 'phoon will be noticeable.  To reiterate, this modification is NOT done by PPS.

The PPS Warrantee isn't completely "broken", it is just that with this Allan-Mod, everything form "the hoses down" is no longer covered by the PPS warrantee, it is now under Allan's 6 month Warrantee.

When I saw Allan mention that he could do a 45 grip frame for the Typhoon (on the Paint Magazine forums), I wasn't really all that interested.  The main reason was that I really had not been all that comfortable with the 45 grip frames on my markers.  So, honestly, I wasn't planning on doing this modification, especially since it wasn't a PPS upgrade.

The Allan-Mod is for any PPS Typhoon based marker, whether single or double barreled, or pumper.

After some thought and after using my Nasty Typhoon on the field earlier this year, I couldn't help feeling that the Allan-Mod would help me be more comfortable with this marker.  Originally it's grip frame's trigger guard had been cut open to allow a double finger trigger (a very early PPS mod for double finger trigger).  I wanted to get the double finger trigger guard installed, since I bought this N'phoon, but had just never done it yet, since I just wasn't that comfortable with it, even though it had the original "Battle Grips" installed.

I had read over at the paint magazine forums, that Alan was doing this, or had done it, so I started communicating with him.  I was very encouraged by his communications and his professionalism (kudos to PPS for having him as an employee).  The bottom line was that I had decided to get the N'phoon 45'ed.

I sent it to Allan and as we communicated more via emails, I discovered that he also had an optional service to provide custom fit Dye sticky grips for an additional $30.  He will groove out the backs of a set of grips and ensure that they fit to his tolerances and satisfaction.  His modification does otherwise include a pair of Hogue grip panels (also custom cut out on the back for the hoses).  The cost of the Allan-Mod is $200 (includes the Hogue grip panels), and includes all the internals for the 45 frame as well for a PPS semi-automatic version of a Typhoon.

The 45 grip is a Blazer 45 Grip frame, with some minor differences, as you can see by the pictures.  When I got my N'phoon back, I also received the original grip frame, all it's internals (including the original X-way) and grip panels.  So, essentially the $200 gets you an entire new "bottom-end" to your marker.

There was a time when I would never had thought I could say this, but I really felt more comfortable with the 45 grip frame than it's original.  I am not sure about doing this for my Blazer (a PPS mod), though.  I think that the weight of the N'phoon (or even a normal 'phoon) warrants the better gripping available for me with the 45 grip frame.  I know that many are already 45 grip frame fans, so I don't need to talk you into this or even believing how much of a change this is for me.  However, I just can't get over how much better I feel when holding and shooting and playing with this marker.

One of my common challenges with the standard grip frame and the heavier markers (the N'phoon with 2 vl3000's specifically), was that the single screw hole and seer-pin was not enough to hold the grips in place very securely.  I had gone through a couple pairs of battle grips previously where the seer pin holes would strip/stretch a bit and the grips would move a little bit.  This does not happen at all with the 2 screw grips on the 45 frame.

My next upgrade will definitely be the QEV's...
